On the Eve of Independence

Incidents on the Historical Night


MApproaching the night of 30 August, the city of Kuala Lumpur was filled with public transports carrying the flags of the Federation of Malaya. Batu Road for example, was packed with cars, buses, trishaws and bicycles and pedestrians. Both old and young walked in crowds towards the Padang Club Selangor. The night was filled with jubilance with bright lights decorating the roads and the surrounding buildings. Many shops along the roads were opened till late at night. 
A special stage was erected on the field and was decorated with colourful lights which extended throughout the field. In the middle of the field, three flags were waved with the UMNO flag on the right, the Union Jack in the middle and the Alliance flag on the left. While tens of thousands of citizens from all races gathered around the field till the roads. Also in attendance that night was local and international official representatives, reporters and photographers as well as the leaders of the Alliance Party from all states. 

Sequence of Events



10.00 pm 
At the field, representatives of the Alliance members of UMNO, MCA and MIC from the Malayan States and Singapore (12 delegates) took their places around three sides of the field. The front row held unto a rope 6 feet in length, while 2000 members of UMNO Youth held another rope.

 

10.30 pm 
300 Alliance Youth formed an honorary parade which took place in the middle of the field facing Jalan Raja (tower clock). The parade was lead by En. Ismail Bontak.

 

11.55 pm 
YTM Tunku Abdul Rahman accompanied by 30 Alliance members on motorcycles (15 UMNO, 10 MCA, 5 MIC) and 2 police outriders arrived at Jalan Raja. The motorcycle parade started from the official residence of YTM Tunku Abdul Rahman.

Arriving, YTM Tunku was received by Dato’ Abdul Razak bin Hussein, Encik Saadon Zubir (UMNO Youth Leader), Dato' Sir Tan Cheng Lock (Yang Dipertua MCA) and V. T. Sambathan (Yang Dipertua MIC). Tunku was then ushered to the stage facing the three flags.

 

11.58 pm 
All the lights on the field as well as the surrounding areas were then put off till everything turned dark.

 

12.00 am 
The lights turned on again when the clock strikes 12 midnight. And this was followed by a deafening call of ‘Merdeka’ by numerous people spontaneously that shook the entire field.    
A team of 12 Alliance Youth which consisted of 6 men and 6 women (6 UMNO, 4 MCA, 2 MIC) came forward bearing two trays. One of the trays was filled with the Union Jack which has been taken down and the other contained the Federation of Malaya flag. The tray with the Federation Flag was carried by Cik Dasimah Ibrahim which was followed by Encik Tahir Abdul Majid and Cikgu Abdul Wahab.  The Union Jack was taken down by Encik Tahir Abdul Majid and was accompanied by the song God Save the Queen which was played for the last time as a sign of the end of British reign in Malaya. The Union Jack descend was received with thunderous applause and the calling of Merdeka spontaneously shook the entire field once more.    
The Federation of Malaya flag was lifted by Encik Tahir Abdul Majid and was accompanied by the national anthem Negaraku which was heard for the first time to the public on the historical night. As soon as the flag reached the top, another cry of ‘Merdeka’ was called out for seven times. Tunku Abdul Rahman gave a salute of respect as the flag rose.

 

12.10 am
Tunku Abdul Rahman then received an honorary salute from UMNO, MCA and MIC Youth Parade and inspected the parade lines while being accompanied by Encik Sardon Zubir. Tunku later encircled the field and inspected 12 groups of UMNO, MCA and MIC members from the Federal of Malaya states and Singapore.  Tunku Abdul Rahman then took to the stage. The team of Alliance Youth of 24 people lead by Encik Abdul Majid Othman came forward bearing a tray filled with a gold necklace with the Gold Medal engraved with the map of the Malay Peninsular and the image of Tunku upon the map. On the map, was the words Father of Nation’s Independence, a title bestowed by the UMNO to Tunku. The gold necklace was placed around Tunku’s neck by Encik Sardon Zubir and was followed by a cry of “Father of Nation’s Independence” three times.

12.25 am 
Tunku Abdul Rahman gave a speech..

 

12.55 am
The ceremony ended with a Doa Selamat recital by Tuan Haji Massood Hayati.

 

1.10 am
The Honourable Parade then moved towards the front of the stage to give a salute of respect to Tunku Abdul Rahman.

 

1.25 am 
Tunku Abdul Rahman leaves the stage.
