2006 - myGovernment

myGovernment is the acronym for the government’s public services portal. myGovernment is the main portal to information and services provided by the Malaysian government via the internet. You can surf through more than 900 web sites from various government agencies. The Administrative Modernisation Unit and the Malaysian Management Planning Unit (MAMPU), under the Prime Minister’s Department, implemented this initiative.

2001 - Kad Pintar

The MyKad is an initiative by the Government of Malaysia to provide facilities to the general public suing a smart card for multiple applications. Unlike other cards on the market, the MyKad combines various government and private sector applications on one card. In addition, the MyKad was designed to accommodate many new applications in the future. The technology behind the smart card is chip and biometric technology. The MyKad uses the latest technology which combines several security features. Among these features is card verification through symmetric cryptographic keys. The management system of various applications utilizes firewalls and a chip platform that is secure.

1999 - Head and Director of the United Nations Office for Outer Space Affairs

In 1999, the Director-General for the National Aerospace Agency, Prof Datuk Dr Mazlan Othman became the first woman from the developing nation to be entrusted with the role as Head and Director of the United Nations Office for Outer Space Affairs based in Vienna. In the 1970s, she did her BSc in Physics from University of Otago, New Zealand under the Colombo Plan Scholarship and was the first woman to obtain a PhD in Physics from the same university.

1996 - ASTRO

Astro is the first subscription-based direct broadcast satellite (DBS) service in Malaysia, under MEASAT Broadcast Network Systems Sdn Bhd, a company-government consortium. Astro began broadcasting in 1996 by offering 22 television channels and 8 radio channels. Beginning 31st August 2006, Astro added 7 new channels with the introduction of 3 Astro channels – Astro Aruna, Astro Kirana and Astro Ceria. The 4 new channels are CCTV4, WaTV, Animax and Zee TV. Starting 28 December 2006, Astro introduced 4 new channels – Al-Jazeera English, ETTV Asia, BBC Entertainment and Malaysia’s 6th terrestrial channel, TV9.

1996 - Teknology Park Malaysia

Technology Park Malaysia – TPM was created under the Ministry of Science, Technology and Innovation, which was entrusted with the responsibility of developing local technology towards industrialization. 


TPM’s main objective is the commercialization of research and innovation from public and private research organizations within the country. Its focus is on promoting high technology industry and active collaboration among the industry, government agencies, research institutions and academic institutions towards promotion technology transfer.

1996 - 7 Flagship Application e-Government

To achieve the objectives of Vision 2020, seven innovative flagship applications was planned for implementation. These applications were developed to kick start the MSC Malaysia initiative and create an innovative multimedia utopia for entrepreneurs and consumers, which involves various multimedia technology fields. The Multimedia Super Corridor (MSC) offers attractive initiatives for Malaysians in the era of information.


The seven flagship MSC applications are Electronic Government, Multipurpose Smart Card, Smart School, Tele-health, R&D group, e-business and Technopreneur Development.

1996 - Multimedia Super Corridor

The Multimedia Super Corridor is an initiative by Malaysia to attract global information and communication technology (ICT) industry players. The project was announced by Dato’ Seri Dr Mahathir Mohamad during the officiating of the Asian Multimedia Conference on the 1st of August 1996. Also known as MSC Malaysia in Malaysia, the MSC aims at attracting IT companies from around the world to set up base in Malaysia by offering temporary tax exemptions for companies as well as high technology facilities. The Multimedia Development Corporation has been given a mandate by the Malaysian government to coordinate the MSC’s expansion and growth.

1996 - Malaysia East Asia Satellite

MEASAT (Malaysia East Asia Satellite) is the name of a line of Malaysian communications satellites owned and operated by MEASAT Satellite Systems Sdn. Bhd. (formerly Binariang Satellite Systems Sdn. Bhd.) As of 2006, the MEASAT satellite network consists of three geostationary satellites designed and built by Boeing Satellite Development Center (formerly Boeing Satellite Systems). MEASAT-1 and MEASAT-2 was launched in 1996 and MEASAT-3 in 2006. The MEASAT-1 and 2 satellites were designed to provide 12 years of both direct-to-user television service in Malaysia and general communications services in the region from Malaysia to the Philippines and from Beijing to Indonesia.

1985 - MIMOS

The Malaysian Institute of Microelectronic System – MIMOS, was established in 1985 under the Prime Minister’s Department and later became an agency under the Ministry of Science, Technology and Innovation in November 1990. MIMOS is responsible for supporting R&D implementations to the local electronic industry to enable it to be more competitive and innovative.

1972 - MINT

MINT was established in 1972 and was known as the Tun Ismail Atomic Research Centre (PUSPATI). In June 1983, PUSPATI was changed to the Nuclear Energy Unit (UTN) and placed under the purview of the Prime Minister’s Department. In October 1990, UTN was revamped as a nuclear research institute of excellence under the Ministry of Science, Technology and Innovation as is known as MINT (Malaysian Institute for Nuclear Technology) on the 10th of August 1994. It is responsible to introduce and promote the use of nuclear science in national development.
