Petronas Twin Tower

The Petronas Twin Towers is the tallest building in the world at a height of 451.9m (1483 feet). The twin towers is connected at the 41st and 42nd floors via a sky bridge measuring 58.4 meters. The towers were designed by Cesar Pelli and Associates, and costed US$1.2bn. The towers were built as the corporate headquarters of PETRONAS and as part of the Kuala Lumpur City Centre (KLCC) project. The 88-floor tower was designed with geometric principles which is at the core of Islamic architecture. Geometric symbols used represented Islamic principles – stability, harmony, unity and rationality.

Malaysian Astronaut

The program to send the country’s first astronaut with a cost of RM95 million was part of a payment offset program involving the acquisition of 18 Sukhoi SU-30 MKM fighter jets from Russia which was signed on the 5th of August 2003. Under this program, the Malaysian astronaut will undergo research and development at the International Space Station (ISS) which is located 402.3 kilometers above the earth’s surface, for eight days.


The candidate chosen to be Malaysia’s first astronaut is Dr Sheikh Muszaphar Shukor,  and a reserve candidate, Captain Dr. Faiz Khaleed.

Sky Diving Expedition at the North Pole

The sky diving expedition at the North Pole was the second attempt at placing a car at the North Pole, after the first time it was successfully done by Volkswagon. The jump involved a national car – the Proton Wira 1.5 or also known as Proton Vantus for the Russian market. Three parachutes were used with a circumference of 30 meters each, while two smaller parachutes were used to balance the platform. As a security measure, the body of the vehicle was equipped with a mesh to ensure that the platform can be landed safely and does not damage the vehicle. The Proton Wire was decorated with the Malaysian flag, the Jalur Gemilang (the Stripes of Glory), on its roof as a display of national pride.

Solo Sailing Around the World

Datuk Azhar Mansor made history as the first Malaysian to sail around the world without the assistance of an engine. The 41-year old sailing enthusiast began his journey on 2nd February 1999 on his boat, aptly named “Jalur Gemilang”. 


On 11th of August 1999, Datuk Azhar Mansor safely arrived at Awana Porto Malai Resort in Langkawi and was received as a national hero by a reception lead by YAB Prime Minister Dato’ Seri Dr Mahathir Mohamad..

Cartoonist Dato' Mohammad Nor Khalid (LAT)

In 1979, cartoonist Mohammad Nor Khalid (better known as Lat), launched Budak Kampung, a comic book based on his own life story as a village son. Five years later, the book was translated into Japanese. In 1998, Budak Kampung was made into a 26-episode TV series as a cooperative effort between ASTRO (Malaysia) Philippines Animated Studios Inc. (Philippines) and Matinee Entertainment (United States). A year later, an episode from the series entitled “Oh, Tok!” won a prestigious award for “Best TV series” for the 13-minutes and above category at the International Animation Film Festival in Annecy, France.

Swimming Across the English Channel

History was made at the English Channel on the 3rd of August 2003 when the national marathon swimmer, Abdul Malik Mydin, cast Malaysia’s name in stone at Wishant after successfully swimming from Dover, England over a distance of 32.8km in 17 hours and 30 minutes.


The success of the sea-faring hero made record as the first Malaysian and South East Asian to cross this challenging channel, since the first time it was accomplished by Captain Matthew Webb in 1875.

Expedition to the South Pole

Datin Paduka Sharifah Mazlina Syed Abdul Kadir successfully made the 1,100 kilometer journey to conquer Antartica, South Pole. Sharifah, who is also a Sports Psychology lecturer in the Faculty of Sports and Recreation in UiTM began the expedition to cross Antartica by ski sailing for 22 days beginning at the South Pole, to the finish line at Hercules Inlet on the 29th of December 2004. A serious knee injury at one point did not stop her from fulfilling the dreams of the Malaysian people to see her succeed. Her success was made even more spectacular when the Antartica Expedition and Logistic authorities declared that she broke a record for her feat, previously set at 24 days.

Expedition to the North Pole

The Read brothers, Geral Read (25 years old) and Justin Read (19 years old) successfully raised Malaysia’s profile internationally when they became the first Malaysians to set foot at the North Pole. 
Gerald and Justin made history on the 20th of April 1999 at 7.27 am Malaysian time.

Other than setting the record as the first Malaysian to undergo such a mission, Justin who is only 19 years of age, may set the record as the youngest person to set foot at the North Pole.

Mount Everest Expedition

Pon 23 May 1997, two national heroes – M. Magendran and N. Mohandas successfully overcame Mount Everest which stands at 8,848 meters high, the tallest mountain in the world. M. Magendran is the first Malaysian to climb Mount Everest, located in the Himalayas, and was followed 15 minutes later by Mohandas Nagappan.

The two heroes were credited with ensuring that the Malaysian Flag stood proud at the mountain’s peak. Their efforts to conquer the mountain received daily coverage for 55 days due to the hard work of nine members of RTM’s Everest ’97 project.
